The Millennial Work Project
Two powerful social phenomena are about to converge on the twenty-first-century organization. One is the "new" workplace; the other is the Millennial generation. The wired generation is entering the wired workplace. In today's technologically oriented global economy, organizations can no longer rely on traditional hierarchical structures. Technology has connected employees in new and different ways. The Millennial generation, just entering the workforce, is the most technologically savvy generation in history. This new generation not only expects but welcomes change in their own work lives and can become quickly bored with monolithic tasks, routine, or repetition. They are "all about" creativity, competence, and community. Because of changes in both the workplace and the workplace, managers must adapt their management styles. Autocratic methods will yield less success than collaboration. Managers must help create an environment, a culture, that encourages collaboration-and that stimulates and focuses the Millennial generation's creative imagination. We believe that the young workers of the Millennial generation bring great skill and creativity to their endeavors. And our work is grounded in the belief that employees play an important role in helping any organization achieve its mission. As part of our Millennial Work Project, we work with organizations to help design and implement new work systems to realize the unlimited potential of these young workers in the evolving twenty-first-century organization. |
